We signed our 8 year old son, Esiaias up for a month of Kempo-Jujitsu at Untalan's Martial Arts as a summer activity, hoping he would enjoy it and maybe gain some self-defense skills. He is homeschooled, and while he has a good amount of social interaction, he has always been on the shy side. We weren't sure how he would respond to the instruction, but we thought it was worth a try.
Our first meeting was impressive! Right away, Sensei Ed drew our son into respectful interaction and participation with the class. He didn't give our son the chance to be shy, but instead encouraged and challenged him to step right into what the class was already doing. Our son responded well, and has continued to do so. Within a very short period of time, we started to notice the impact of the classes in his social life, as he became less and less shy. He began to approach kids he didn't know and talked to them, and he began to respond respectfully to adults who spoke to him, when before he would just hide behind one of us.
Our son looks forward to Sensei's class every week. Sensei Ed is great at recognizing the kids' efforts and rewarding them with praise, encouragement, and promotion. He is strict with the kids, but he is also kind. They can tell that he cares about and believes in them. It has been an amazing experience for us, and we are so grateful to have found Untalan's Martial Arts. We are continuing to see our son grow in confidence and character, and we have Sensei Ed to thank for much of that.

"Do not let your adornment be merely outward...rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God."
1 Peter 3:3-4
I first became associated with martial arts through my grandson, Wesley, who expressed an interest in martial arts. For one year, I routinely brought him to Untalan Martial Arts and watched in the “audience”.
And then one day, Ed Shihan asked if I had any interest in joining a class. Up until that point, it had never crossed my mind to participate!
In the years since then, Shihan has dedicated himself to teaching me, and my fellow classmates, the various techniques associated with each level. He continues to challenge us to learn and to grow in the field of martial arts.
Because of the individual that Shihan is, he has created an environment at his dojo that focuses on each classmate participating with and encouraging fellow classmates. He does not expect perfection.
Shihan continually reminds the students that we learn through our mistakes, and to perform to the best of our ability on any given day. He reminds us not to get discouraged if we forget a technique, but to just continue to practice!
Shihan has created an effective learning environment because he balances the hard work with a fun atmosphere.
It is a safe and fun dojo and I look forward to each class.

"We’ve been sending our son Jack, to Sensei/Head Instructor Ed for couple years now. The martial arts training that my son receives is amazing. Ed truly teaches with his heart and all the kids listen. It’s the quiet confidence that is uplifting and a great example for the children. The training is wonderful to show respect, discipline, and inner strength. There has never been pressure to keep our son in the classes for the money. There is no pressure on being super competitive; everything is based on love and how to protect oneself. We love it there! "

As a busy mother of 5 children, I didn't think I had the time, money, or the energy to go to self defense classes to pursue my interest in martial arts and exercise. Fortunately, after watching my 2 teenagers every week participate I realized and with the Sensi's encouragement to try out the class that I too could do the class. Deciding to come here has enriched my life. The school has amazing instructors and everyone is so supportive. Untalan's martial arts are ideal for someone who is interested in getting exercise and exploring defensive techniques that can save your life under a duress situation. I truly feel that my life has been enriched by participating and learning along side with my teenagers , and that I'm able to start my journey because of the classes and teachers here. –

I am a 63 year old male who retired a couple of years ago. I have been interested in taking martial arts classes since I was young, but could never quite find the time until now. I saw a class listed in the HARD bulletin, and thought I’d give it a try. Based on the very positive experience I’ve had, I wish I had started a long time ago.
I have truly enjoyed the instruction provided by Shihan Ed. He makes you work hard, but I have never felt intimidated or pressured. I feel both physically and mentally challenged. He is very patient and has adapted techniques to fit the physical issues that someone of my age experiences.
I am taking private lessons as well as a group class both of which I have really enjoyed. Shihan Ed makes you feel like you are part of a family.
Thank you Shihan Ed for such a positive experience

Our son started joining Sensei Ed's martial arts class in August 2015, he was 4 then. A good friend of mine encouraged me to sign up my son to a martial class because her son was also attending Sensei's class at that time. She only had very good things to say about the class and the teacher. We wanted to experience it first-hand so we signed him up, and the rest is history. At first we thought maybe if my son reaches yellow belt, we can probably stop. But we didn't, our son is already 8 years old and now a blue belter. If there's one thing I'd like the parents to know about Sensei Ed, he's very knowledgeable not just about his craft but also teaching kids. He knows how to command respect without being too strict. He knows when to allow play and when to demand focus and attention. He knows when to become a teacher, and when to become a friend to his students. He acknowledges small and big victories. He challenges his students to become leaders. He knows the strengths and weaknesses of his students, and he uses that to encourage them. Our son was very shy and timid when he started, but as the years went on, he slowly gained confidence and started to become more outgoing and assertive. I believe that my son's discipline and focus at school can be attributed to the training that he got from Sensei's class. We are so happy and extremely satisfied with Sensei Ed and his martial arts class, and I strongly encourage parents to enroll their kids to his class as well.

We wanted our children, JP and TJ, to learn self-defense, gain more focus, have more respect for others, and learn the discipline of self-defense. We tried to search for a school and Sensei that would accept the needs of our sons. Sensei Ed, Sensei Chris, and Sensei Jerome have been instrumental in our children?s learning of self-defense. There were times when we almost gave up because it seemed like they were not following. Sensei Ed kept on pushing and said they were doing well and never gave up on the boys. Thanks to Sensei Ed?s patience and tenacity to teach, JP and TJ have learned to embrace their Saturday morning private self-defense classes. They have earned their leadership badge and gotten their yellow belts. There is still much to learn but we trust that with a great team behind them they will learn selfdefense which we believe is a lesson they will bring with them for the rest of their lives. Last December was a proud moment for us as parents because JP and TJ were able to perform on stage with the other students. JP and TJ got through their exercises and were so proud of them for performing along with the rest of the students. We are thankful to Sensei Ed for always believing in JP and TJ. He believes in his students and always includes them to make them belong as part of the Untalan?s Self-Defense School ohana.Julie Anne Tamyo & Family January 2016
***************************************************************************I have known Sensei Ed Untalan for about 5 or 6 years. We met at a training in Sacramento & quickly became friends, at the time I lived in Huntington Beach, CA. Although we didn?t see each other again for several years, since the time that we met, Sensei Ed has been a constant source of encouragement both in my Martial Arts Education and in My Spiritual Journey with Jesus. I call him Pastor Ed sometimes. I believe our meeting was a divine appointment, as I never imagined I would be training at Untalan Martial Arts here in Hayward, CA. Since my training began at Untalan Martial Arts I have learned that Sensei Ed, has incorporates different martial arts systems into our training. Additionally he has competed and won a grand championship, yet his focus is not on his achievements but on preparing his students to practice safety & to be the best martial artists that they can be. His motto is ?Progression, Not Perfection.?Ed understands that everyone learns at a different pace, and in a different way, and accommodates special needs. He will also incorporate a sense of humor, so we laugh a lot during our classes: this brings some levity to an otherwise serious atmosphere, which helps put students at ease.Benedetta Marsac - Brown Belt 4/19/2015-----------------------------------------------------------------I joined Untalan's Martial Arts Center after seeing how dedicated Sensei Ed really is. I'd taken Martial Arts before I had children and had a really great teacher. I'd been interested for years in starting again, but was very disappointed with the few introductory classes I'd tried. They were very forms based, with no understanding of what the forms were for. I felt it gave students a false sense of security. Mastering forms without the knowledge to apply them does not mean one can defend oneself.Sensei Ed is very dedicated to the art, but he is also very dedicated to his students. He not only teaches the forms, but has us practice the practical application of them so we know the different uses of what we are learning in order to actually protect ourselves. He has a great group of students and encourages a supportive, family atmosphere. He takes personal interest in each student and encourages them to do their best. He's very down to earth, funny and engaging with instruction. Not only have I seen the growth of self defense ability in both of my sons, I have seen their growth in maturity, focus, and self discipline. I'm thankful that we found Shihan. The overall experience is much more than just martial arts training.Beverly Temporal 4/15/2015----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Ever since our daughter started at the Untalan's Martial Arts Center about 3 years ago, she has developed physical skills and also her interpersonal skills. She recently earned her 1st Degree Black Belt and is now a completely different person in a positive way. She has more confidence in herself. Sensei Untalan treats all his students with care and fairness. He gives advice and guidance. Many a times we have heard him give advice and guidance about life in general. His students don't only learn self defense, but also learn about life. His encouragement is limitless. We know that our words do absolutely no justice to him compared to how we feel about him and his efforts. From the bottom of our heart, THANK YOU!Rafiqa & Taiyeb Raniwala (Parents of Kausar Raniwala) 4/15/2015----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When my daughter turned 5 and started kindergarten, we knew we had to find a solution to a couple of problems we had. First was the bully at school and second was the lack of physical activity. Under Sensei's Ed?s guidance, my daughter quickly overcame the fear of going to school. Within a couple of days, her self-confidence grew which quickly led to the end of the bullying! In addition to resolving the bullying issue, they instilled strong values and confidence in her, which led to greater focus and engagement in school.
It was a no brainer for my wife and I to decide to enroll our son as well.
Untalan?s Martial Arts Center has provided our children with a tremendous positive attitude. They have learned structure, discipline, control and self-defense. We have seen our children improve their ability to make good choices in their behavior, and they have developed an ability to focus on the task at hand and overcome obstacles that might have previously stopped them.
It is very important in this day and age to properly equip our children will the skills and desire to be a good and responsible citizen, which should serve them well in their journey through school to adulthood. I highly recommend Untalan?s Martial Arts Center to all of my family and friends.

My daughter has been enrolled in Ed¹s self defense martial arts class for
just under a year now. She has greatly enjoyed her experience and
continues to grow every session she attends! She is currently a yellow
belt, and Ed exudes so much patience, care and dedication to all the
students. I have seen a change in my daughter¹s discipline and eagerness
to try harder.
Ed is an amazing teacher/Sensei and really brings out the best in these
children. It was a wonderful testament to all their handwork at the Asian
Festival held a few weeks ago, my family and I as well as the crowd were
Keep up the great work Ed!

My kids signed up for Ed Untalan's self defense class for two seasons in a row. Mind you, my kids don't like to take any classes - but they really enjoyed his class. There were times that our schedules did not permit me to take the kids to class but they insisted they go so I found people to take them and pick them up.
They had a great time and sometimes when I horseplay with them at home they land one of their techniques on me they learned in class - OUCH! It's great to see them learning to defend themselves and have fun at the same time.
We were going to sign up this season but realized with the camps and vacations, they would miss at least 4 classes so we decided to sign up for the fall. Otherwise, they would be there on Thursdays!
Glad you have a program like this that encourages kids, gives them self confidence, and teaches them respect!

It has been a great pleasure to be part of the Untalan?s Filpino Martial Arts & EAAB?S Self Defense team. I walked into your classroom with curiosity and little nervousness, and what I learn from you and my classmates are much more beyond my satisfaction. Your experiences and knowledge of martial art is top notch and truly inspiring. More importantly, you never hesitate to share your full knowledge with us. I always appreciate your patient and great sense of humor, as well as the full support from my classmates.
Your classes are full of fun and practical techniques, I never felt bored in your classes. I enjoy the friendly and humble atmosphere, which you try to show us martial art and self-defense is not only physically build up the strength and confidence, but also to practice our mind and to respect others.
I look forward to continue my training in the summer, and thank you for all your help and support.

What I like about Untalan's Martial Arts Center is when Sensei Ed teaches something he doesn't teach it and move on. Sensei teaches something and keeps going over it until you know it like the back of your hand, and even then he doesn't let go of it. Your always going over the things you learned every time you go in to train. He also teaches you humiliation and humbleness, meaning nobody is perfect. You do the best that you can do according to your ability, and if you mess up you laugh it off and start over. You always need practice. He also teaches you forms are defense maneuvers that you have an option to apply when you get in an altercation. To be honest before I enrolled in Untalan's Martial Arts Center I had no idea what forms were truly for. Also that when you bring the forms to life, as in when your practicing them, or sparing with them, there in angles and your going in circles not just a straight line going back and forth. There was an incident after I enrolled in Untulan's martial arts, we were watching the matrix I think, and my mother pointed out that when one is in an altercation with more than one people you always fight in a circle. After that I thought to myself "Oh, that's why he makes sense why he makes us spar with the forms after practicing them." It made sense because when we spar with the form we were constantly turning yourself and our opponent instead of going in a straight line. What I also like about Sensei Ed is when he teaches us he teaches as if he were talking to one of his own child, he's always saying to his student that he feels like we are his child, and he doesn't want to see us get hurt. Which I think is awesome because you can teach someone something but they may not u understand it. He goes the whole nine yards to make sure we know what were doing, know it by heart, and know how to properly apply what we're doing. Sensei Ed is very encouraging, he won't force you to do it but he will want you to try and encourage you to try something new. The classes are always fun, he is always laughing and joking and very hands on. I strongly recommend checking out Untulan's Martial Arts dojo. And let people see for themselves.

We have been attending EAAB'S Fitness & Self Defense aka (Untalan's Martial Arts Center), classes for more than a year in both the Hayward and Pleasanton locations and have found Sensei Ed's classes to be an enjoyable learning experience for our family!
Being a parent of a special needs child, it is not always easy to find a class that can accommodate my son. To find a class that both my sons and I could take together is wonderful. I have found that teaching comes naturally to Sensei Ed and he makes it easy for all abilities, ages, and experience to learn. My boys and I have enjoyed learning the different forms of self defense in class and practicing them at home. Tyler has really progressed in Sensei Ed's class in large part due to Sensei Ed's patience and calm demeanor. At the beginning, Tyler had a hard time focusing, but over time he was able to learn the steps to the different forms of self-defense. It was evident that Tyler was very proud of his progress and himself. One thing that I appreciate in Sensei Ed's approach to self-defense is that he appreciates everyone?s ability and celebrates all progress that is made. There is never a feeling of competition, but only praise for students? striving to do the best that they can. The importance of respect, patience, and leadership are intertwined throughout each class. This class has been a great experience for our family and we?ve each been able to take something away from the class

On July 8 , 2013, I had the privilege of observing Sensei Ed, the self-defense teacher at the Harvest Valley church program located in Pleasanton, CA. I was invited to consult with a parent of a student in the mixed-age Martial Arts class. I found the class to be highly autism friendly, with exceptional awareness and acceptance of sensory accommodations and communication disorders. Sensei Ed has a masterful approach to demanding discipline through dignity in a blended class of all ages and ability. This program is a very healthy environment for individuals with differences, empowering all to do their best in a typical setting.
First of all, thank you to Sensei Ed and the rest of the wonderful staff and students. Our twins Anica and Agnes so looks forward to each and every self defense class and does not ever want to miss a training at all. They have been in your class for the past 2 years now and it has brought significant changes on themselves for the better. Aside from learning and being able to defend themselves if attacked, they have gained lifelong skills. They are able to "work out" and exercise, develop quick physical and mental reflexes, brought up their confidence levels and self-esteem. With all that said, humility is practiced and being down to earth is the code. Traits that my wife and I admire. Sensei Ed, thanks for being Anica and Agnes' mentor at this stage in their life and hopefully forever!

'For years we tried to find an activity our teenager would enjoy and "stick
with". From the first 10 minutes of our trial Self Defense class I knew
this had great potential to be a lifetime sport for our daughter, not only
for pure enjoyment and physical exercise, but also for the mental challenges
of self defense, and would also provide valuable skills to help keep her
safe navigating her high school and college years (and beyond!). She is
learning to read aggressive body language and learning the skills to defuse
potentially dangerous situations, also how to respond if a situation does
turn into a physical confrontation. We have watched her develop in Martial
Arts skill, but we have also noticed a huge increase in her self confidence
and poise. We love our daughter, but we really LIKE the person she is
becoming, and a huge part of that has been joining Sensei Ed's classes!'

The Lord truly paved a way for my daughter when we signed up for karate with Sensei Ed. He is not only an incredibly patient and knowledgeable instructor, but also visibly joyous in his interactions with the children. We have done many activities but this tops all of them. Watching my 4 year old perform things I never would have believed she could do under the watchful eyes of Sensei Ed is a privilege and a treat. She is excited to go to class every time and tries to teach her moves in Sunday school. I look forward to many more opportunities to watch her learn and grow into the person God created her to be.
In her own words...
"I like karate because I got the staff and the nunchucks. I like the 12 moves. I like when Sensei Ed teaches me to punch and not get hit. I love my Sensei Ed! "
After my son's friend (12 yrs. old) became suicidal due to a bullying incident at school, I signed my son up at Untalan's . I am so glad I did and believe it is one of the best things I can do for him. Sensei Ed is an excellent instructor and he takes the time to give individual instruction with each student no matter where they are in the process of learning. He has impressed many parents with his incredible patience while teaching. My son loves learning at this dojo and I love that the Sensei teaches values associated with martial arts such as respect, compassion and discipline. Schools are rough and our kids are vulnerable and they need to know how to protect themselves. Now, my son has a lot more confidence about his ability to defend himself (that makes him a less attractive target to bullies). If you are a parent who worries about safety like I do, sign your child up, I promise it will make you feel incredibly smart.

My husband and I talked about Joey's (3yrs old), classes. We feel that he has benefited so much already from training with you. I am so impressed with his retention of what he has learned in class. We are also so surprised at his seriousness and commitment to the class. We would like to enroll him in the 10 week session with you (twice a week).

" It is said the quality of a good teacher (Sensei) is reflected in his students." These students that I am getting to know, at EAAB'S Fitness & Self Defense - Untalan's Martial Arts Center reflect the compassion, kindness and skill in Martial Arts training that Sensei Ed conveys to all. At age 62 these caring qualities have helped me to expand my comfort zone and begin to learn something worthwhile (Kosho Ryu Kempo). I urge anyone of any age to come and join us in the warmth of the Martial Arts family, to get fit, physically, mentally and spiritually and to enjoy Sensei Ed's crazy sense of humour.
Sensei Untalan teaches with humility and authority and constant encouragement. Having studied several martial arts and achieved my black belt in one, I consider myself blessed to be able to practice with Sensei Untalan and his sons. In Kosho Ryu Sensei teaches us from the basic concept of motion and movement, so it is very natural and effective. The techniques flow from the first move, which is to get you to safety. For exercise and self-defense I find this practice to be most effective. – Rob Borghese (Pleasanton, Ca)
My 8-year-old twin boys have fallen in love with Karate. They enjoy learning with kids of various ages and abilities. They like and respect Sensei Ed and his teaching style. As Christian parents I appreciate Sensei Ed’s approach to Karate from a Christian perspective and not with the focus on Eastern religions. My 5 ½ year-old son can hardly wait to join his big brothers in the next session. Thank you, Ed, for your commitment to our boys!

My husband and I wanted our three children (ages 17, 14, 11) to take a self-defense class with a strong emphasis on how to avoid, and how to get out of unpleasant situations. Traditional martial arts classes look good in competition and on television, but we wanted a self-defense program that had practical everyday applications. After reading the class description for EAAB’s Fitness and Self-Defense in the Hayward Area Recreation District magazine, I knew it was exactly what we were looking for. Lady luck smiled on us, because the martial arts style taught at EAAB’s Fitness and Self-Defense is Kosho-Ryu Kempo, Ching Sai Do, Kempo-Jujitsu, Hapkido and Kuk Sool. Lady luck kept smiling on us, because the instructor (Sensei Ed Untalan) is fabulous! In many fields (recreation and academic) there are some instructors who are knowledgeable, yet lack the skills to teach; Sensei Ed is acknowledged as a senior level 7 black belt instructor/martial arts practitioner, who teaches children as young as 5 years old, teenagers, and mature adults. Sensei Ed has the ability to teach this varying age group with great (great) patience, and is able to move between the different student skill levels with ease.
Sensei Ed loves to see his students advance, and in order to advance students need to attend class, and as a result, Sensei sends class reminders to parents and guardians via e-mail and text message (which I appreciate very much since I check personal e-mail on the weekend). In addition to the normal class schedule, Sensei Ed offers special clinics with other master practitioners throughout the year. These clinics offer the students the chance to interact and experience other teaching styles and techniques; The clinics also add great variety and diversity to the normal program. All in all, our kids enjoy taking classes at EAAB Fitness and Self-Defense, and having Sensei Ed as their instructor. I would highly recommend EAAB Fitness and Self-Defense to any parent looking for a practical self-defense class for their child (or children).

"Sensei teaches with enthusiasm, patience, encouragement, and humor. He values and respects each of his students as individuals, and sets an example for the kids, as well as the adults, in his classes. He motivates me to work hard and try to do my best, and helps me learn to have trust and confidence in myself."
I have been training on and off for years and have always been in search of a dojo that i can grow with. I stumbled across EAAB's fitness and self defense while banking and decided to walk in and observe on how class is conducted. To make a long story short, I loved what I saw and am now a student of Sensei Ed. He is a very patient and caring instructor who has the gift to teach people of different fitness levels, age, and goals. He doesn't run his dojo like a factory and provides individual instruction based on your skills and abilities. I am very happy with the family environment that the dojo provides. We all encourage each other and carry on the respect and kindness that Sensei has for us when we treat our fellow man. Overall, it's been a great experience so far and I look forward to the journey ahead.

Our 7 year old son has been enrolled at EAAB’S Fitness & Self Defense since January 2011 and we absolutely love the class. Sensei Ed (the instructor) is an incredible teacher and role model for the children and adults who attend. The first aspect that we were pleased to here was that it is a class that is made up of all ages and sizes who work together. In the few months we’ve been there, we have seen the class grow tremendously in size through word of mouth. The parent’s joke now is that he is so popular that we are going to have to relocate for more room. I tip my hat off to Sensei Ed because he has the patience to put up with every age he teaches and that is amazing. Another great quality Sensei Ed has is communicating with his class and parents. As we all know, laughter is great for the soul and I cannot end without saying that Sensei Ed is a funny comedian. In closing, we have found the perfect self defense class for our son and if you’re looking for the RIGHT one, EAAB’S Fitness & Self Defense is the ONE and ONLY!

My two sons have been Ed Sensei's students for about 2 years now. They have learned disciplines that they can use in their everyday life, not just technique. My boys and I really feel part of an extended family with Ed, we are not just customers.
“Ed is a humble and down-to-earth instructor with a real passion for teaching. His classes are not overly focused on combat but upon learning about yourself and how to avoid or defend against a physical attack. I was inspired by what my son was learning in Ed’s class and decided to try it myself. Since beginning my training, I feel I am more physically fit. It has also helped me to shake some cobwebs and exercise my mind. It takes time and effort to retrain your mind and body to work together and it’s sometime humbling when I realize my own limitations. If you have ever been interested in really studying a martial art or if you are looking to break out of the rut you are in, I recommend this class.”
